Diesel Fuel Leaks into Elizabeth River
download
Diesel fuel has leaked into an inlet of the eastern branch of the Elizabeth River in Norfolk.
A listing tugboat leaked around a thousand gallons of diesel into the inlet. The Coast Guard said a contractor contained the spill and is working to recover the fuel. Fire officials say the inactive tug was moored to another tug and apparently took on water when the tide came in, causing the fuel to make its way out of the nearly 80-foot boat. The tug has not sunk, it’s been stabilized, and the owner is trying to get it upright. The Coast Guard is continuing its investigation into the cause of that diesel spill.
