Fourth Circuit Court Nominee
Both Virginia Senators Warner and Webb yesterday urged their Senate colleagues for a prompt vote on the nomination of Justice Barbara Keenan to serve on the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Recommended by both Senators last June, Keenan would be the first female judge from Virginia to serve on the federal appeals court.
Tobias: Well, she is a real trailblazer, there’s no question about that.
Carl Tobias, law professor at the University of Richmond.
Tobias: She served on all four levels of the Virginia judiciary and was a judge before she was even 30.
Tobias says the Senate seems to be dragging its feet on a no-brainer.
Tobias: What’s critical is the court has four vacancies out of 15 and really needs all of its judges in order to deliver justice. And she was approved with no dissents by the judiciary committee four months ago this Monday.
In addition to support from both of Virginia’s Democratic senators, she has Republican support, too. Governor McDonnell specifically requested that she deliver him the oath of office, when he was sworn in.
