Still No Suspect in Slayings of Virginia Tech Students

Authorities investigating the slayings of two Virginia Tech students in the Jefferson National Forest say they have pursued more than 1,000 leads, but still don’t have a suspect.

Nineteen-year- old David Metzler of Lynchburg and his girlfriend, 18-year-old Heidi Childs of Forest, were found fatally shot last August in a campground parking lot.  The girl’s father, a Virginia State Trooper, says there are two reasons not to give up on the case.

Childs:  First of all, we have a killer on the loose.  I certainly wouldn’t want another family or an individual to go through the loss that we have gone through.

Sgt. Don Childs.

Childs:  Our society is not set up where people just can do wantonly what they want, because obviously that wouldn’t be a structured society, it would be mayhem.

Montgomery County Sheriff Tommy Whitt held a news conference yesterday, said the case has not reached a stalemate, his investigators just need a couple more pieces to the puzzle.  And he urged potential witnesses to refresh their memories and help catch the killer.

Childs: That’s probably top priority, to get this person off the street.
