Virginia Recognizes Indian Tribe

The state Senate has passed a resolution granting recognition to a Virginia Indian tribe.

Robert Green, chief of the Patawomeck Indians, said the action validates the identity of the tribe and helps them to protect sacred burial grounds.  Singer Wayne Newton is a Patawomeck and earlier this month he was at the State Capitol with Chief Green to support the resolution.  It gives the tribe a seat with the Virginia Council on Indians but does not grant sovereignty.  The resolution, already passed in the House of Delegates, takes effect immediately.
