Plans Finalized for New Rec Center

Officials of the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA met over the weekend with their architectural design team to finalize plans for a new community recreation center in Northumberland County.

It’s a large project, 2.8 million dollars, to transform the former Northumberland High School gym in Heathsville into a state-of-the-art YMCA, with basketball courts, fitness center and outdoor pool.  Architect Rod Grozier says big changes are in the store for the 25-year-old building.

Grozier:    I think that folks that know this building and are familiar with it won’t recognize it, when they step into it as this community’s new YMCA.

The project should provide a lift for the county’s hard-hit economy, initially through construction jobs, and later through new YMCA staff positions. Mark Huffman, WCVE News, Heathsville
