Blizzard Poses Danger to Virginians

Governor McDonnell says many Virginians are in “extreme danger.” As the latest Winter storm poses new threats to already battered areas.

The governor says northern Virginia and the upper Shenandoah have been under blizzard conditions for some time.  But this is worse.

Governor:  We have a very dangerous situation.  We’ve had several storms but, while the previous one had higher accumulations and  winds, with this one ... are creating the opportunity for a real risk to human life.

Those winds - up to 54 miles an hour, visibility to zero, up to fourteen inches of new snow and a windchill of 5 to 15.

Governor:  We’re urging extreme caution to all Virginians to stay inside.

Even inside could be cold without power.  And  those same winds and heavy snow threaten to escalate power outages where electricity is needed most.  And though the storm may be over, the extreme cold could last another week.
