Perriello Visits Chase City
When Virginia’s Fifth District Congressman Tom Perriello met with voters in Chase City yesterday, constituents focused many of their comments on health care reform and the economy.
Democratic Congressman Perriello spoke with voters at Delray’s restaurant in Chase City and said his constituents there were about evenly split on healthcare reform, but there was more agreement about economic problems, with Mecklenburg County’s unemployment rate topping 10 percent. Claude Chapman, a retired textile worker, said voters are worried.
Chapman: The concerns of this area are jobs, jobs, jobs. There are no jobs available, things are closing up, you go up Main St. and some of the businesses are closed and we need somehow to create jobs.
In Martinsville, also in Perriello’s district, unemployment is 20 percent. Perriello says he knows addressing joblessness is key.
Perriello: First and foremost, people are concerned about the economy. You know, until we can get jobs coming back to this area, everything is really secondary to that.
Perriello runs for re-election in the fifth district this fall, having narrowly defeated Republican incumbent Virgil Goode in 2008.
