Democrats Lose Senate Seat in Massachusetts
Virginia’s Democratic U-S senators say Tuesday’s special election in Massachusetts sent a message to Washington. And their party’s health care bill is now in jeopardy. Alex Keefe reports from WCVE's Capitol Hill Bureau in Washington.
Senator Mark Warner doesn’t beat around the bush when he talks about the Republican victory in Massachusetts.
WARNER: We got walloped.
Warner says losing a seat in a historically Democratic state should be a wake-up call for his party.
WARNER: There needs to be a recognition that, no matter what the substance of the health care bill includes, that folks don’t feel that it’s gonna be moving in a right direction.
Democrats will lose their 60-seat supermajority - and their ability to block filibusters – when Republican Scott Brown becomes the Bay State’s next senator.
Still, Senator Jim Webb says Tuesday’s loss shows that voters are losing faith in their government – and Senate Democrats should pay attention.
WEBB: It’s my strong belief that we shouldn’t have any more votes on health care, per se, until senator-elect Brown is seated.
Meanwhile, Senate Republicans say they hope Brown’s win will mean an end to the Democratic health care bill.
