Have fun during the holidays in the Community Idea Stations' free MERCY STREET Scavenger Hunt, running through January 17, 2016.
RICHMOND, VA December 15, 2015 – On Sunday, December 13 the Community Idea Stations kicked off the MERCY STREET Scavenger Hunt to a packed house at the Byrd Theatre for the Richmond Premiere of PBS’ new original series MERCY STREET.
The Civil War medical drama MERCY STREET takes viewers into the lives of Americans on the Civil War home front as they face the unprecedented challenges of one of the most turbulent times in our nation’s history.
The Hunt: Inspired by MERCY STREET, WCVE-PBS has created a scavenger hunt that takes viewers "beyond the broadcast" and around Richmond, Virginia to discover unique Civil War stories found in our local community. With friends and family in town and plenty of downtime for urban exploration, players can enjoy the free scavenger hunt during the holiday season!
The Prize: The scavenger hunt winner will receive a weekend getaway to Old Town Alexandria, courtesy of Visit Alexandria. The prize package includes an overnight stay at Hotel Monaco in downtown Alexandria, dinner at the Jackson 20 and a “Key to the City” museum pass to visit the real sites and stories that inspired MERCY STREET.
Leveraging input from community partners, including the American Civil War Museum, the National Park Service, the Virginia Historical Society, and The Valentine, the MERCY STREET Scavenger Hunt tasks are steeped in local history, while reflecting core MERCY STREET themes, including Civil War medical advances, the changing role of women, and the experiences of freed and enslaved African Americans.
To Play: The Scavenger Hunt is free and open to the first 1,000 players. To participate, download the scavenger hunt app Scavify for iPhone or Android, search for the MERCY STREET Scavenger Hunt, complete the tasks and post them on social media with #MercyStreetRVA.
The scavenger hunt runs through January 17 at 11:59 p.m., ending after the television premiere of MERCY STREET. Players may begin the scavenger hunt at any time before January 17th.
