Pianist Kirill Gerstein recently released the entire set of 12 Transcendental Etudes by Franz Liszt. Both in study and in performance, the 12 Etudes have been a transformative journey for Gerstein. He explained to me in a recent interview about the effect that playing the complete cycle has on interpretative decisions, as compared to playing them as individual works.

He has recently commissioned four new works through VCU”s Presidential Research Quest Fund. This is the first time this has been awarded to an entirely artistic endeavor. The new works are by composers Allen Vizzutti, David Sampson, Anthony Plog and Andy Scott.
