Virginia Opera will be performing Gilbert & Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore this weekend at the Carpenter Theatre. Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Adam Turner and bass-baritone Jake Gardner (Sir Joseph Porter) stopped by the 88.9 WCVE studios to discuss the opera and the company’s production.

This weekend, the Richmond Ballet will collaborate with the Richmond Symphony and RSO Chorus in a performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, choreographed by John Butler. The performances will take place at the Carpenter Theatre Friday (10/31) evening at 7:00 p.m., Saturday (11/1) at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., and Sunday (11/2) at 2:00 p.m.
The Oberon Quartet, a local resident group at St. Catherine’s and St. Christopher’s Schools, stopped by the 88.9 WCVE studios Friday afternoon (10/24) to perform live and talk about their upcoming concert. The concert will be held Monday evening, October 27th at 7:00 p.m. in Bannard Chapel at St. Catherine’s School on Grove Avenue.
The Richmond Symphony is presenting a new summer concert series “Summer at CenterStage,” in partnership with the University of Richmond School of Music and VCUarts. The inaugural season will feature 8 one-hour concerts highlighting the complete sonatas by Johannes Brahms. The individual concerts will spotlight works for piano and solo instruments.
Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy offers a magnificent getaway! The festival features symphonic and chamber concerts over a four-week period. It attracts first-rate musicians to participate as performers and educators, as part of the Wintergreen Summer Music Academy.
The Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra will perform a free concert Sunday evening, May 18th at the Carpenter Theatre. The orchestra is led by conductor Peter Jacobson, who stopped by our studios to discuss the concert along with bassoon soloist Johnny Willing. Johnny is a very talented senior who attends Atlee High School in Hanover County.

Capitol Opera Richmond is a relatively new all-volunteer organization here in town. This weekend, they’ll finish out their second season by presenting Aaron Copland’s “The Tender Land” at the Henrico Theatre. Performances are Friday and Saturday evening, both at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are just $12, $10 for seniors and students.
