A very sad day in the blues world...please join us in appreciation and rememberence of the legendary B.B. King with special airings of “B.B.’s Blues: A B.B. King Appreciation” tonight at 7:00 p.m. on Jazz with Peter Solomon and again tomorrow (5/16) on Time for the Blues at 11:00 p.m. Another programming note: Fresh Air will feature Terry Gross’s 1996 interview with B. B. this afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
As hosts for Time for the Blues, John Porter and I are always listening for interesting stories of the blues! Last Friday (3/19), Fresh Air played an interview from 1987 with Samuel Charters, the blues and jazz historian who helped ignite the blues revival of the 1950s and ‘60s. Charters made field recordings of forgotten and previously undiscovered performers. He also wrote two books. He died Wednesday (3/18/15); he was 85.
Join us this week (9/20/14) as Time for the Blues answers that age-old question--just how does John and Henry find the blues they play? Well, we have no order on our shelves whatsoever! Most of the time we're staring at rows of CDs and this week I'm picking some stuff you haven't heard for awhile, but should have!
Join us for TWO, count 'em TWO special programs this Saturday (7/5/14) as 88.9 WCVE airs the special Beatles in America at 1:00 p.m. and then later at 11:00, Time for the Blues features British blues through the 60's as well as some great bluesy tracks from the Beatles! Lots of great tunes for your holiday weekend!
You will definitely want to join us this week (3/8/14) as Time for the Blues has Buddy Guy's latest 2-CD set and it is smokin' hot! John and I also have Tommy Castro and the Painkillers newest and it's no slouch either! We'll even hear commentary from Tommy about his new band and the songs! By the way, John says I'm a tremendous slouch!
John and I invite you to join us this week (11/9/13) as Time for the Blues returns to “Chicago Blues: A Living History,” incredible remakes of classic blues from all the greats! Unlike the old “sold-on-TV-fake-rock-hits-LPs” from the ‘70s, these remakes are the real deal! We’ll also find out what Steve Miller was up to when he returned to his blues roots in 2010!
