In the digital age, newspapers are fighting for survival. But in the Northern Neck, one newspaper is not only thriving, but celebrating 100 years of existence.
In 1916, a group of Kilmarnock businessmen founded the Rappahannock Record, a weekly newspaper that has been covering the area ever since. As the paper prepares to mark its centennial, publisher Fred Gaskins credits its success to its continuity and the fact that it's locally owned. “There’s not many independent papers left in the state of Virginia. There are probably about three or four of us.”
