Here at In Your Ear, we continue to marvel at the abundance of creative young, string bands based in North Carolina…making their own way through an enduring tradition. In this program, we spotlight a quartet from piedmont NC called Mipso, which is a name that they just made up back in 2010…a word that didn’t previously exist, but a word that’s now come to mean well-crafted tunes, haunting harmonies and wonderfully casual and engaging stage presence.
The boy from Boston by way of Florida would become one of the most noted and beloved musicians ever to call Richmond home. Over his four decades of writing songs and sharing his commanding stage presence, Robbin Thompson made legions of fans including prominent players like Bruce Springsteen and Eagle Timothy B Schmit. Robbin fought a long and courageous battle with cancer that ended in the early morning of October 10, 2015.
Ok, I have to give a nod to the the title of this week's World Music Show (10/17). If you're of a certain generation or generations, then you may recognize that snippet. And if you don't recall where it's from, don't worry--I'll reveal it later on because there are more pressing things to uncover, such as a brief overview of what to expect on the show this week.
Virginia Opera is presenting Jacques Offenbach's “Orpheus in the Underworld” this weekend at the Carpenter Theatre. Performances are tonight (10/9) at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoon (10/11) at 2:30 p.m. Guest conductor Anne Manson will lead the Richmond Symphony.
The Richmond-based Braxzillian Ensemble Quatro Na Bossa has appearred on WCVE’s Jazz program several times over the years and it’s always a blast to have them live in the studio. The members of the group include guitarist Kevin Harding, singer Laura Ann Singh, percussionist Andy Brockman and bassist Rusty Farmer.
In this segment that originally aired in July of 2012, you’ll hear music of Joao Donato, Joao Gilberto, Carlos Lyra and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
The Amargue Bachata Quintet with Andre Veloz performs live on the Altria Stage Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., and you can hear that performance broadcast on 88.9 WCVE.
