New Release: Mendelssohn - Symphonies 1-5

To mark the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe has released a new CD set of the Mendelssohn symphonies under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Music Director Designate of the Met Opera. This release is the latest installment in Nézet-Séguin's collaboration with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe - a recent partnership that has already garnered two Grammy nominations.

Heavy Metal Cumbia?

I love open-ended questions for leads. As in, what do you get when you cross Heavy Metal with Cumbia music? Glad you asked, because on this week’s World Music Show (10/14) you’ll get the answer.

And that answer will come from my interview with the leader of the Oakland, Ca based band called La Misa Negra (who’s name is a reference to a Heavy Metal group—to find out which one, you’ll have to tune in).

Paradise Has No Border

Let’s face it—it’s been a rough week. No getting around it. So hopefully on this week’s World Music Show (10/7) the musical choices will help our tired souls and perhaps lift us up a bit.

In hour one, we’re going to take the mellow/string driven road by hearing new music from the new collaboration featuring Mali’s Trio Da Kali and the long running Kronos Quartet. Their new CD, called “Ladilikan” is like a cross-cultural fertilization, in which both parties bring their A game to the turntable.
