A Toast to Father’s Day

Cheers to all you Fathers out there! On this week’s World Music Show (6/18) we’re celebrating some Fathers in World Music, as well as Grandfathers, sons, grandsons and daughters. From Bob and Ziggy Marley, to Ali Farka Toure and Vieux Farka Toure, this week’s show will showcase a few highlights of some stellar musicians.

Father’s Day is a great time to dig into some really great musicians who had such a lasting impact on their genre, that they inspired not only their off-spring, but their off-springs off-spring. In the first hour, I’m going to jump right into two musicians who left such a legacy and who also collaborated on many albums. I’m speaking of Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Both of these brilliant, master Brazilian composers spawned some musical heavyweights who can stand on their own. I’ll kick off the first set with a chunk of music from all that have something to do with both of these giants. First, I’ll play the song “Bim Bom,” by Bebel Gilberto, which was written by her father Joao. I’ll follow that with a track from Jobim-Morelenbaum Quarteto who perform a song written by Antonio Carlos Jobim's and performed by his grandson Daniel Jobim.

Another highlight of this first hour is a comparison between Afrobeat founder Fela Kuti, and his son Seun Kuti. The similarities between the passion they both bring to their music and to their political message is amazing.

And if this first hour wasn’t enough, I’ll feature some great guitar work by the late Malian superstar Ali Farka Toure and one of his sons, Vieux Farka Toure. They are both masters at their craft.

But don’t think the first hour will have all the fun. In hour two, I’ll have a nice bit of music featuring the work of Bob Marley and Ziggy Marley, In which I’ll featuring songs from both of their early careers and their later work.

And if you follow the World Music Show, then you know that I often throw in a few musical surprises from musicians or bands that you might not associate with World Music. This week is no different, so look for some surprises from Joe Jackson, and Ben Harper. This week’s show is one in which both you and your father can listen to.
