There is something about opening up a new CD. Is it the crinkle of the plastic? No, it’s not that. Is it the forced-removal of that plastic security tag, which takes a millennium to remove? I think not. No, for me, it’s the anticipation of what will be found by spinning the disc, as it were. And in the reading of the liner notes. So on this weeks World Music Show (7/2), as luck would have it, I get to play some new music.
And right out of the gate, the most exciting new stuff I’ll feature is from the Beastie Boys! Yes, your eyes are not deceiving you. I typed in The Beastie Boys. They have a new CD called “Hot Sauce Committee Part Two.” And though you wouldn’t normally associate this band with World Music, I was able to find one song on the album that really sounds worldly. And by worldly, I mean it sounds like old school dub music. It could be because the track features the singer/rapper Santigold. It’s quite a thrill for me to be able to play something from them.
Some of the other bands and artists I’ll play include Katchafire, King Tubby and Aurelio, plus Michael Franti, David Byrne.
Plus, I’ll continue with my new music theme by highlighting music from Playing for Change2, which features some really great tunes, including two cover tunes from The Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder. And you’ll hear a couple of other tunes off the new Jolly Boys CD and from the Ontario band Bedouin Soundclash.
As you can probably guess, I’m not one to just play the “suggested” tracks. I love to investigate CDs in their entirety. In the coming weeks, I’ll find more new music to play and I’ll keep my investigations ongoing--all in the name of expanding the realms of World Music.
All in all, it’s going to be another great show. If you want to leave a comment or post a suggestion, please do so below. The World Music Show aires Saturday nights at 10:00 p.m. Follow me on Twitter @wcveworldmusic.
