We hope you’ll join us this week (5/17/14) on Time For The Blues as Henry and I are playing some fantastic music and have more than a few surprises just for fun. If you only listen to one blues show Saturday nights at 11 – make sure it’s Time For The Blues! We have some classic Stevie Ray Vaughan and a sampler from Stax's 50th Anniversary set!
Recently, we successfully completed our springtime membership drive and we want to thank everyone who called in a pledge of support. Without you, there would be no 88.9 WCVE and Henry and I would most likely meet in the unemployment line every week.
While that may sound a bit flippant, we really do appreciate every listener and everyone who supports the station and its mission to bring the best music and news possible to our listeners. I don’t just mean the blues; for those of you who tune in for classical, jazz, folk, Celtic, world, and all the rest can find great programs to enrich your life.
So, if the pledge drive is over, why am I yammering on about it? Good question. Henry has connected with our membership department and has received a couple of very hot CDs that were offered as “thank you” gifts for a previous pledge drive.
Now we’re going to say “thank you” and play some sides from these albums and even more for you.
It’s no secret that we are big fans of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Any chance we get to play this Texas powerhouse, we’re going to take it. This week we’ll feature a few sides from the 2006 compilation, “The Real Deal: Greatest Hits, Vol. 1,” and you won’t want to miss them! A couple of tracks floored us that you might not have heard before (like the audio sample above of his version of "The Sky is Crying" performed at Carnegie Hall)! Henry also promises an extra treat with Stevie and one of his guitar heroes in concert!
Our second feature of the night focuses on another powerhouse – the label known as Stax. Looking at the history of blues, R&B and soul, Stax is one of the giants. This was a regional label that got a major distribution deal (with Atlantic) that eventually went its own way and launched the careers of some of the greatest stars of its era. Like with Stevie, we found tracks on this compilation that you may not have heard but you will be glad you tuned in when you hear them!
But wait, there’s more. Henry has created something he’s calling “Retro Rewind.” He won’t divulge too much about it, just that he wants to play some highlight sides from previous shows and give you the listener the opportunity to vote as to whether we should do another feature on the artist or group.
Sounds like fun--Henry promises he’s going to deliver the most amazing name for a band that he’s ever heard.
Plus we have a couple of other sides from some folks we’ve played recently, Portland-based singer/bassist Lisa Mann and country/southern-infused blues guitarist Shane Dwight.
So tune in for a great time and the best late night party going. You know if the "house is a-rocking, don’t bother knocking" – just come on in (hint, hint on one of our Stevie Ray Vaughan songs). We’ll be there, the music is going to be hot, hot, hot, and Henry and I will have some of the worst jokes in history.
All we need is you and a few hundred of your closest friends. Take a nap if you have to or sleep late the next day. Around here, it’s always Time For The Blues!
Time for the Blues with John Porter and Henry Cook airs Saturdays at 11:00 p.m.
