Selwyn Birchwood and More Blues Incorporated!

Join us this week (7/12/14) as we're kiciking things into high gear on Time for the Blues with the debut Alligator release from guitartist/songwriter/vocalist Selwyn Birchwood and some more sounds from the first British Blues group, Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated!

Sometimes during the summer months, Henry and I enter a long deep funk. And not the kind that James Brown brings to our tape decks, I’m talking about the kind of deep malaise that follows around a couple of guys who follow the Cubs and the Phillies. Yes, both of us are big time baseball fans and we are currently being tortured by our respective teams. It’s not easy cheering for teams that have collectively lost over 20,000 games in their history.

So, we know the blues and we’re bringing you some really good blues this weekend.

Our friends at Alligator sent us a fantastic CD that we would have featured earlier except it landed on my desk and got lost among an avalanche of old paperwork. I’m not saying it’s a trifle overgrown, but once I found Edmund Hillary and a couple of Sherpas summiting the North Slope.

Florida native Selwyn Birchwood is an upcoming force. He won 2013’s International Blues Challenge. The whole thing. He also took the top guitarist award. He’s released his first CD on Alligator, Don’t Call No Ambulance, and it fires on all cylinders. This guy has a bright future and we’re going to feature him and keep our eyes on him for any new releases. Give him a listen and you’ll be as hooked as we are. (Check out the audio sample above!)

Then we’re going to revisit a band Henry found - the first documented British blues band, Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated. Henry’s the Brit historian, so I always enjoy hearing what he brings into the studio. It’s a silly name (sounds like something Monty Python came up with) but trust me, these guys are great.

But unlike our respective baseball teams, we’re not done yet. We’ll sample recent releases from The Alastair Greene Band, and our friends Li’l Ronnie & The BlueBeats featuring Claudia Carawan.

Plus we’ve got a teaser track from the brand new live CD from Rick Estrin and the Nighthawks and you won’t believe how he’s able to run through all the lyrics of the song you'll hear! We’ll definitely be featuring more of this later.

And just for fun we’re going to revisit the legendary King Curtis, and Henry’s got one of his surprises so it’ll be something, I just don’t know what. So listen in, and we’ll both be surprised.

So kick back in that easy chair, slip your shades on, and turn the volume up. You’re going to have a great time – the music is great and the jokes – well, they leave something to be desired. Kind of like out baseball teams! Time for the Blues with John Porter and Henry Cook airs Saturdays at 11:00 p.m.
