Join us this week (9/21/13) as John and I share our blues wish list with you on Time for the Blues! Not only will you hear tracks from one of Buddy Guy's best,"Living Proof" but also some amazing performances that we're sure you'll want on YOUR wish list! Here's hoping that all your wishes come true...
Did you ever make a Christmas wish list as a kid using the Sears holiday catalog? It was a tradition in my house and it was no coincidence that the toy section of the catalog was bigger than any other! Didn't always get everything but one or two was enough for me! Sometimes us kids would make a poor choice...like the Ka-bala game! Kind of an enhanced Ouija board that really wasn't much fun...oh well! Got it right with the James Bond briefcase, though!
So John sat down last year and started researching great blues CD's for his Amazon Wish List! I got in on it as well later on and we put together a large list of things that should be staples in our blues library! We knew we'd never be able to get all of them, so we highlighted the ones we wanted first! It took some months but we finally have some of these classics and this entire show is made up of blues from our list!
Buddy Guy's recent CDs have been a revelation--in his mid-seventies, Buddy's guitar has never been better and when you hear tracks from 2010's "Living Proof" we're sure you'll agree! (Check the sample below.) He has a new CD out called "Rhythm and Blues" that we don't have yet, but it is a screamer as well and we'll get it soon!
Some tracks on the show are from CDs we used for recent shows as sneak peeks--like the Tedschi Trucks Band's "Everybody's Talkin'!" The performances are so powerful, Susan's voice so Joplin-esque, that we're featuring another from that release. Speaking of Tedeschi Trucks Band live, they'll be performing at the Carpenter Theatre on Thursday night (9/26/13)--you can check their website here.
How 'bout a little more Bacon Fat? That compilation of harp master Rod Piazza's late 60's group with legendary George "Harmonica" Smith was featured quite a bit a few weeks ago. However, the track we picked this week is just Rod and the band with an interesting vocal twist!
Another big treat will come from Joe Bonamassa--his treatment of "Blues Deluxe" is nearly ablaze! Joe says that Rod Stewart wrote this when he was with the Jeff Beck Group in the late '6os and I seem to remember we played that a couple of years ago in one of our Unusual Suspects shows--don't miss Joe's version, though! If you want to see Joe live, he'll be in town on 11/9/13 performing at the Landmark Theatre and you can check his tour schedule here.
For more, we now have something we've always wanted--Sun Records: The Ultimate Blues Collection! Yes, Sun Records in Memphis not only recorded Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins but also had an incredible amount of blues greats record for them in the early 50's! This 3-CD collection is almost historic in blues lore and we'll play tracks from Little Milton, Junior Parker and more!
Want even more??? When it comes to blues too much ain't enough! We'll add tracks from Magic Sam and the Big Head Blues Club (working a Robert Johnson classic with guest B. B. King) to really round out the show! We're hoping that should entice you to grab a short nap (even though we're on earlier now), put on your jammies and jam with us! Time for the Blues with John Porter and Henry Cook airs Saturdays at 11:00 p.m.
Got a wish list of blues of you own? Share it with us and we'll do right by you!
