Believe it or not, Time for the Blues celebrates it’s 5th Anniversary this week (8/7/2011)! We’re more surprised than you are! The Rat Pack won’t be there--but the show will be as cool as if they were!
Even though I always wanted to be in the Rat Pack, I was too young and lacked...well... talent! John, on the other hand would have made a great Rat Pack-er! So, what does Frank and Dean and Sammy have to do with our 5th Anniversary program? Not much...I just liked the cool picture. On the other hand, we are playing some of the coolest blues you’ll ever want to hear! All our tracks feature icons of the blues--people who did (or would have) run with the Pack!
How about a classic set of Muddy Waters? From his 50s Chess sides to the Epic sessions of the 70s and even more, you’ll hear Muddy at his best! No Electric Mud this time, we promise! We’ll also bring back a great track from Charlie Musselwihite's South Side Band’s first album Stand Back! (Here Comes Charley Musselwhite's South Side Band--I can’t leave that part out--it still cracks me up that Vangurard misspelled Charlie’s name on the cover!) Charlie’s Early in the Morning played on our very first show, August 6, 2006! Check out the sample below!
But wait--there’s more! (See--wouldn’t John and I be perfect in an informercial?) You’ll hear John Lee Hooker with Carlos Santana from JL’s Grammy-nominated CD Mr. Lucky, some classic Memphis Slim (with a very young Matt “Guitar” Murphy) from his Untied Records session in 1954 and Elmore James from his 1961 Fire recordings! It doesn’t get any better than that--and they really, really work! (Infomercial here we come!)
We both love the ladies of the blues and we’ll feature them with tracks from three of the best: Etta James, Bonnie Raitt and Koko Taylor! The Etta track, Steal Away is from one of her soulful, bluesy, best LPs, 1967’s Tell Mama. She was sent by Marshall Chess to record in legendary Muscle Shoals and it sure made the entire record one for the memory books (sorry, Joe Franklin)! We recommend this disc highly.
Now you can’t have a 5th Anniversary party without two blues crossover greats--Stevie Ray Vaughan and Michael Bloomfield! We’ll enjoy tracks from both with Michael’s being from his best collaboration, The Electric Flag. Even former President Lyndon Johnson is featured on their version of Howlin’ Wolf’s Killing Floor!
So we humbly invite you to grab a nap, stay up late and join us in celebrating our 5th Anniversary! John’s bringing the Crab Dip! I’m bringing the tupperware to take the Crab Dip home in! Time for the Blues with John Porter and Henry Cook airs Sundays at 1:00 a.m.
Do you have a favorite show or bad joke or even a featured artist from our past shows? Let us know and we’ll bring ’em back!
