Hope you plan on joining us this Saturday (4/26/14) on Time for the Blues as Henry Cook and I will be bringing in some great late night music and really bad jokes to cap off the day. Consider this your invitation to the best after hours party going. And we're serving up new Savoy Brown, Bob Corritore and our last episode of our chat with local harpmaster Li'l Ronnie Owens!
Our man Henry Cook is back from Las Vegas with lots of stories and a little bit of swag and somehow he’s even managed to find the time to put together a killer show. It seems that while he was gone, several great releases ended up on his desk (some may have landed on mine, but who can tell?) and now we’re going to play them for you.
By the way, Henry sent me these pics of his budget room at the Econolodge! Apparently, there was some problem with his room reservation so to make up for it they comp'd him this retro 80's suite! He sent me these pics at 2 a.m! Thanks, Henry!
First up is Kim Simmonds and Savoy Brown. I remember them when they were just Savoy Brown, but who are we to quibble with an artistic choice? Henry’s thinking of changing the name of our show to Henry Cook and Time For The Blues (featuring John Porter--Time Permitting)!
Anyway Savoy Brown has been kicking around for many years now and Kim Simmonds has been the driving force all along, so I guess it’s good that he’s getting more recognition. He’s out with a new CD on Ruf Records called "Goin’ To The Delta." We're going to check out a few tracks and maybe one up our collective sleeve from an earlier CD.
Might want to drop in just for that.
But wait, there’s more. We’ve got a new release from Delta Groove by our friend and one of today's harp greats, Bob Corritore. Aside from having the coolest hair in the business, Bob is one of our favorite players and he’s always putting out great work. On this new release, Taboo, he turns loose with an all-instrumental CD with great guest players (like Jimmy Vaughan, Junior Watson and Papa DeFrancesco) and we’re going to take it out and give it a spin (check out the audio sample)!
Speaking of Bob, we met him when Richmond harpmaster Li’l Ronnie Owens brought him to town along with young guitar-slinger Andy Poxon who jammed with the group that night. Well, we’re going to play a little of Poxon’s latest along with another EllerSoul Records' favorite, 4 Jacks. Li’l Ronnie himself will stop by to tell a story or two about these guys.
And for more fun we’ve got Shane Dwight and The Terry Hanck Band and Friends. It’s going to be a great show and we can only make it better if you’re there with us.
So get ready to make it a night and set your dial to 88.9, WCVE or your browser here and listen in. We’ll bring the music and the fun all you have to do is join us, and call a couple dozen of your closest friends to join us! Time for the Blues with John Porter and Henry Cook airs Saturdays at 11:00 p.m.
