Elvin Bishop! More James Brown! Cool RCBS Shows!

Make sure to make a little time for yourself this weekend and join us for Time for the Blues this Saturday night at 11 (8/23/14), as Henry and I are cooking up some fun, frivolity, and a whole bunch of good blues for you! You know there’s no place you would rather be, so kick back and turn the volume up!

Right off the bat we’ve got a couple of the all-time greats for you. You know you can’t go wrong with Elvin Bishop, and he’s getting some help from some of his friends including Charlie Musselwhite and Mickey Thomas. If all you think of when you hear the name Elvin Bishop is his hit song, “Fooled Around And Fell In Love,” you are going to discover a whole different side of a versatile blues artist. You'll love the tracks we'll play from his Alligator Records release "Can't Even Do Wrong Right!" (Check out the sample!)

We’ve got another treat for you; we’re also going to revisit some blues sides from Mr. Please Please Please, James Brown himself! Along with most of the human race, Henry and I are big fans of Brown and once we finally got our hands on some of his best blues work, we couldn’t wait to share them with you. If all you know about the Godfather Of Soul is his appearances in the Blues Brothers movies, Eddie Murphy’s impersonation and the fact that Mick Jagger bankrolled a movie about him – let us bring the man, the myth and the dancing machine to life!

Plus we’ve got a couple of sides from a guy we played last year – the Daddy Mack Blues Band. His previous release, “Soulfinger” was a lot of fun and had a real high energy. Since then, he’s performed approximately 200 shows and honed his sound to a razor’s edge. Be sure to check the tracks we'll spin from his latest "Blues Central" and see if you like him as much as we do!

As much fun as it is to listen to the blues, catching a live show is even better! Thanks to our friends at the River City Blues Society of Virginia and EllerSoul Records, coming up this week you’ll have the opportunity to catch one of the most in-demand guitarists, Anson Funderburgh along with Mark Hummel’s Golden State-Lone Star Review! If you’re not sure, relax, we’re going to listen to a couple of sides from Mark's recent CD "The Hustle is Really On" and once you hear how great these guys are, you'll want to hear more! The show is at the Capital Ale House Downtown Music Hall on Tuesday 8/26 at 7:30 p.m.! There's more info on that and RCBS' Hot August House Party on Saturday the 30th here.

That’s all happening starting this Saturday night on 88.9 WCVE! It wouldn’t be a party if you didn’t show up, so plan on hanging around and joining in all the fun! Time for the Blues with John Porter and Henry Cook airs Saturdays at 11:00 p.m.
