You will definitely want to join us this week (3/8/14) as Time for the Blues has Buddy Guy's latest 2-CD set and it is smokin' hot! John and I also have Tommy Castro and the Painkillers newest and it's no slouch either! We'll even hear commentary from Tommy about his new band and the songs! By the way, John says I'm a tremendous slouch!
So John and I have been trying to get our hands on "Rhythm & Blues," the incredible 2-CD set from Buddy Guy that was released last summer! His previous disc "Living Proof" from 2010 was on our wish list and we featured lots of tracks from it late last year. For some reason, as Buddy gets older, he gets better! His guitar work is fast and crunchy, his vocals sound great, and his producer/drummer/songwriter Tom Hambridge has given this set an incredible sound and energy! You'll love the tracks we'll feature including one with Beth Hart trading vocals with Buddy! Can she sing or what? Check out the audio sample!
Now, we've featured Tommy Castro on the show before...he was one of the driving forces behind the "Legendary Rhythm and Blues Revue Live" CD from 2011 that featured Tommy and a lot of guest stars going to all kinds of hot spots by bus and tearing up the joints! They even did cruises! (We weren't invited.) Tommy and his new band the Painkillers have just released "The Devil You Know" on Alligator and it is packed full of Tommy's scremaing guitar--we'll play a few tracks from it, inclucding the title cut! For a little bit extra, Alligator made available to us Tommy doing commentary on the songs and the creative process, so you'll hear him as well! Sneak preview...one of the tracks we'll play has Marcia Ball lending her considerable talent on piano and vocals!
We'll also share a track from a nice release "Walking in Circles" by the Alatair Greene Band from 2009--this one ended up in a box so---my bad, but at least I found it and it is a great disc! Another more recent find from Aaron Williams and the Hoodoo, "10:49" (that's the name of the CD) has a real smoldering cut that we're going share with you as well...I guarantee you'll hear more from both these discs in upcoming shows!
Last, but not least, I plan to play "Guess that Brit Crossover Band" with John! I found a couple of tracks from a very well-known British Invasion group that proves just about all of them played blues when they started! Can I name...The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, The Animals, The Pretty Things....etc? Even you may be surprised who this is when you hear these songs!
So wash that Snuggie, get your popcorn ready and stay up not-so-late with us--you'll be glad you did--and you can slouch if you want to! Time for the Blues with John Porter and Henry Cook airs Saturdays at 11:00 p.m.
