2013 Blues Music Awards!

You won’t want to miss this week’s Time For The Blues (6/9/13)! Henry and I are pulling out all the stops in our never ending quest to bring you the best blues around. And this time you'll hear some of the best blues of the year!

You ask anyone who has never won an award and they’ll all tell you the same thing, “I’m all about just doing the work, not winning awards.” That’s what Henry and I say whenever we get cornered by somebody at a party. Just kidding, we never get invited to parties… Anyway, if any of these folks ever actually WIN an award, you better believe that’s going to be the first thing on the resume…

Well, this week’s Time For The Blues is going on our resume, because this time, it’s all about the award winners. The 2013 Blues Music Awards winners to be exact! We won’t be playing all the winners, but we’ve got a mighty fine selection for your listening pleasure.

How about The Mannish Boys with a side from their 2 CD set "Double Dynamite?" That might tickle your fancy. Speaking of tickling, Victor Wainwright sure tickles the ivories and we have a selection from him as well. And we featured soul-shouter Curtis Salgado on past shows and we'll have another great track from his award winnng CD "Soul Shot!" (Check out the sample below!)

You think that would be enough, but we’re just getting started. We have songs from Janiva Magness, Irma Thomas and the Tedeschi Trucks Band. You know Muddy Waters is stopping by and he’s bringing The Rolling Stones, so you don’t want to miss that action.

We’ll also feature sides from three artists that we lost too soon, but who left us as winners: Michael “Iron Man” Burks, Ann Rabson and Magic Slim. We’ll miss all of them dearly, but will play their music forever.

There’s more, but you’ll want to tune in to hear it all. Plus you can find out just what I’m up to for our friends at the River City Blues Society of Virginia! Okay, since you asked real nice, I’ve been honored to be a judge in their 9th Annual Blues Challenge being held at the Capital Ale House downtown music hall Sunday afternoon (6/9/13)! For full details, check out their website at Rivercityblues.org.

So make sure you catch that nap – tell the family you’ll get to those chores later – and then stay up late with us! We’ve got lots of great music and even more bad jokes; all we need is you and all your friends to stop on by and it’ll be an award-winning party! Time for the Blues with John Porter and Henry Cook airs Sundays at 1:00 am.

Got a blues fave that you think should have made the winner's list this year? Give us a shout and we'll put 'em on a future show!
