Virginia Opera presents a “double your pleasure” evening at the Carpenter Theatre this weekend. It’s two operas at one performance...“Pagliacci” by Ruggero Leoncavallo and “The Seven Deadly Sins” by Kurt Weill.
So what does the Accordion, Keith Richards and Led Zeppelin have to do with World Music? Well, they’re all part of this week’s World Music Show (10/15/16), in which we’ll investigate crimes against the accordion, or rather we’ll explore this magical instrument as it travels through some of the crevasses of World Music. Capitol Opera Richmond, a non-profit, all volunteer organization, is in the midst of their most ambitious production yet. They are presenting Noli Me Tangere, the opera based on the novel by Philippine national hero D. Jose Rizal. Performances are at the Henrico Theatre tonight, tomorrow and Saturday evenings (October 13-15) at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoon (October 16) at 3:00 p.m.
Pianist Marco Benevento first gained attention as one-half of the Benevento/Russo Duo, his instrumental indie/jam partnership with drummer Joe Russo. Although he and Russo continue to collaborate frequently in various ensembles, Benevento is now several years into a solo career that has seen him develop into a full-on entertainer: incorporating vocals, synths and dance-rock into his live shows and recordings. His newest album, The Story of Fred Short, came out earlier this year.
