In this age of digital downloads, instant messaging and up-to-the-minute updates on people's various or nefarious activities, it's nice to actually get a piece of mail. And it's even more exciting to get a package sent via Airmail all the way from Cyprus. Now, occasionally my inbox--both my physical and electronic one--get various packages of new music stuffed inside of it. While some gifts are good, others are not (and they mysteriously find another box to live in). That's why when a new CD that's really good comes my way, it's like a miracle of science.
Forget those other end-of-the-year "best-of" lists. Sure, they have a purpose and offer some valid recommendations, plus they have the luxury of showcasing all the new music that was released this year. But on this week's World Music Show (12/28), you'll get a better "best-of," compilation! How so? I'll take some of the new music that came my way and combine it with some of my favorite songs from the six seasons of hosting the World Music Show--hence, it's the annual "Raves & Faves" show, 2013 edition.
We asked Ian Stewart, host of The World Music Show, if he had any holiday gift ideas for world music lovers. Here's what he said...
Yes, it's that time of year, which means it's time for the annual World "Holiday" Music Show (12/21)! Peppered throughout the two-hour program will be tunes not normally heard during the holiday season. Then, mixed throughout the rest of show, will be songs that fit perfectly into this time of year.
Ok, I'll admit it. It's halfway through December and I'm already burned out. Perhaps that's a normal thing this time of year, right? In any event, becuase of this rush of things to do, see, touch, feel, experience, etc., I decided that it's time to mellow out--at least for a couple of hours. So, on this week's World Music Show (12/14), we'll keep the tempo at an even keel. And though most of the show will follow this mantra, there will be spots of sound that will ensue a bit of glee and foot tapping.
NPR posted its list of the 50 Favorite Albums of 2013 earlier this week, which prompted me to come up with a list of my own. I didn’t do a whole lot of active searching for new music in 2013, instead I let it come to me. I don’t have 50 worth mentioning, but here are my 13 favorites from 2013. Some are from 2012 but I didn't hear them until this year!
