The Professor’s Picks: Lawrence Olds Band; David Michael Miller; Slam Allen; Shaun Murphy

Is it just me, or does this year seem like it’s flying by? Henry and I have been up to our eyeballs in great music and it’s still coming in. Thanks goodness. That means we have all sorts of great new things to share with you and we’re on the prowl for even more. Thanks for listening to Time For The Blues, and let’s get to this month’s releases.

Unwrap This

Christmas in July? Sure, ther's a saying for that. I know I've read it somewhere. And I'm guessing it's retail related. However, in this case of this week's World Music Show (7/4), the title is apropos. You can say that it's my clever way of relating that I have a slew of new music to unwrap. We'll check out bands from Buenos Aires and Chile as well as from South Africa and Kinshasa--it'll be like the bow around this week's show. And inside the box we'll hear what rap music sounds like when it comes from Brazil and Senegal.

Notes from America Vol. 3: The Nied’s Hotel Band

First off--they are not a hotel band. There is a fascinating story behind John Vento’s project called The Nied’s Hotel Band and that’s explained in this third volume Notes from America--my new open ended mini-series detailing real music--real musicians--across the country.

If you’re new to this, in the first two volumes, we travelled to Texas and in our last round--right here in good ’ol Richmond, Virginnie.

Say, Are You Hungry?

On the menu for this week's World Music Show (6/27), it'll be a Cuban & Latin feast of sorts. We'll sample some live music from Buena Vista Social Club, some film music from Mario Grigorov and some classic Cuban beats from the one & only Desi Arnaz. Plus, thrown into the mix will be desert blues music and some upbeat Brazilian music from the legendary man pointing a finger at you—Tom Ze.
