The Central Virginia Wind Symphony presents the 13th annual Holiday Spectacular this coming weekend. Having co-founded the ensemble in 2005, I’ve had the pleasure of working with our region’s most talented high school musicians as their Music Director and Conductor. Our mission is simple: highlight and support our local school music programs, while giving these amazing students an opportunity to shine in a professional-like environment.
The Central Virginia Wind Symphony is comprised of the most talented high school musicians across Central Virginia. Participants come from schools in the City of Richmond, Henrico, Hanover, Chesterfield and Goochland Counties, as well as north to Stafford County and south to the Tri-Cities.
Our guest soloist for this program is Michael Lowenstern, widely considered one of the finest bass clarinetists in the world! Michael has performed, recorded and toured as a soloist and with ensembles of every variety. He has written music for concert, film, dance and various other new media over the span of his 25-year career. His collaborations have included the landmark recording “In C Remixed,” featured on NPR’s RadioLab. Michael’s performing credits include working with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Steve Reich Ensemble and The Klezmatics. To date, he can be heard on over fifty CDs, includingmkkk six solo recordings of his own. Not satisfied with the status-quo in music education, Michael’s irreverent and somewhat controversial YouTube series has become a source of information and edutainment for millions for viewer across the globe. When he’s not teaching via the internet, he’s traveling regularly as a guest lecturer at universities across the world. Based in New York, Michael serves on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School. When he’s not doing all that, he’s dreaming up advertising brands as the Group Creative Director for Amazon Advertising. We’re thrilled to welcome Michael to Central Virginia this weekend!
I hope you’ll come out and enjoy the sounds of the holiday season, while supporting our local high school musicians. The December 10th concert will be recorded for broadcast on 88.9 WCVE on Christmas Day. More information about the Central Virginia Wind Symphony is available HERE.
Yours in good music,
