February 28 – Richmond Center Stage: “Sit-in/Stand Out” Forum recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Thalhimers’ lunch counter sit-in. Moderated by Sheila Johnson with represenatives of the “Richmond 34” and current students.
In February, 1960, 34 African-American students began a series of sit-ins at the Thalhimers department store lunch counter and other Richmond establishments, continuing demonstrations against segregation begun earlier that month in Greensboro, N.C. At the time, black citizens were not allowed to dine with whites in public places, and the students were arrested for trespassing. Slowly, some businesses began to serve African-Americans, and the demonstrations eventually led to passage of the Civil Rights Act, which bans racial discrimination in such businesses. Today, Richmond Center Stage occupies the site and encompasses the Grace Street façade of the Thalhimers store.
