Join WCVE Public Radio commentator Thea Marshall, author of Neck Tales, for an historic and contemporary journey through Virginia’s Northern Neck. First broadcast by Ms. Marshall on NPR, these stories paint a vivid portrait of this part of Virginia that’s a world apart—from the region’s wine, watermen and Chantey singers, to its poets, patriots, kings and citizens.
"If anyone is qualified to write about Virginia’s Northern Neck, it is Thea Marshall. Neck Tales is a compelling, valuable, literate and enriching contribution to the cultural history of the Neck," says Roger Mudd, former anchor for CBS News. Thea Marshall, nationally known radio personality, is a talented storyteller, drawing her audience in with enthusiasm and the spontaneity of an adventurer.
How long did it take to write Neck Tales?
Not as long as it took to get it published..How are you Marshall....
What is your oldest story?
If you mean What is the story that I wrote that goes back the furthest, when I wrote about the very very first road in the Northern Neck, which was really the rivers...
I can't wait to read it!
Thank you for your support!
Hi Thea! Where do you get all of your ideas for your stories??
Mr. and Mrs. Google and history books, old-timers, old old newspapers, and who knows...
This is Eva (Thea's granddaughter) -- Just testing to see if this works!
This works!
Have you written about the Horsehead Cliffs found in Westmoreland State Park?
No, what a great idea!
How long have you lived in the Northern Neck? Don't you miss the big city?
I've lived here almost 27 years. Come down here and you'll see why I don't!
What about writing about the history of agriculture on the Neck?
In Neck Tales, you'll find lots of stories about agriculture. About barley, and how a farmer has helped create a fabulous single malt whiskey, and the new farm museum, and the life of a farmer's wife. You have any suggestions?
Hi Thea - I'm from the Eastern Shore of Virginia - Northampton County - have you ever been over there?
No, is that near Easton?
It is south of Maryland - down Route 13. Or, traveling there from Richmond it is over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. I have never been to the Northern Neck so I was wondering if they are similar since the Eastern Shore is on the Chesapeake Bay. Thank you!
The best way to learn if they are similar is to come on down and try our crabcakes! And thanks for supporting WCVE :)
Hi Thea! Who is your favorite historic female from the Northern Neck?
Hannah Lee Corbin, big sister to the "Lee boys." She was our young nation's very first suffragette, and an interesting eccentric!
