Community Conversations

Community Conversations
Community Conversations use a Community Idea Stations television program as a conversation starter and follow the Conversation Café dialogue model, a new model of social conversation (visit the conversationcafe.org web site to learn more).

Each participant follows the agreements for a great conversation:

  • Open-mindedness – listen to and respect all points of view
  • Acceptance – suspend judgment as best you can
  • Curiosity – seek to understand rather than persuade
  • Discovery – question old assumptions, look for new insights
  • Sincerity – speak for yourself about what has personal heart and meaning
  • Brevity – go for honesty and depth but don’t go on and on

“Locked Out: The Fall of Massive Resistance”
This one-hour documentary was produced by WCVE PBS in partnership with the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia. “Locked Out” tells the stories of the students impacted by Massive Resistance. Following the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, mandating school desegregation, Virginia’s government instead chose a path called “Massive Resistance,” closing many public schools instead of integrating them. “Locked Out” offers first-hand accounts of the negative effects of this abuse of public power and yet how it also paved the way for future progress.
