Freedom Riders: American Experience

Freedom Riders: American Experience

We often take our civil rights for granted.  Back in 1961, the United States was in the grip of segregation where a definite inequality existed if the color of your skin just happened to be black.  Many states enforced this inequality with threats, beatings and imprisonment, especially in the South where terrorist acts and maltreatment was the order of the day under Jim Crow laws.  But from May through November 1961, 400 brave college students--both black and white, both male and female--challenged these deep-rooted prejudices against black citizens.

Civil War Cannon

The Civil War began April 1861 and ended April 1865.  Appropriately, on the 150th anniversary of the beginning of America's Civil War, PBS will re-broadcast Ken Burns's entire landmark 1990 series.  Burns's epic documentary brings to life America's most destructive--and defining--conflict.  The Civil War is the saga of celebrated generals and ordinary soldiers, a heroic and transcendent president and a country that had to divide itself in two in order to become one.
