“Summer Slide” Reading Initiatives

We all look forward to the rest and relaxation of summer and, of course, it is important to take a break.  But hot, lazy summer days with nothing to do may not be the best thing for our students.  During the summer months, many children who do not participate in educational enrichment activities can experience learning losses, often referred to as the "summer slide."

On June 9, 2011, thirty-one volunteers got together at Fairfield Court Elementary School in Richmond’s East End to read to all the students in the school. This included kindergartners through fifth graders and exceptional education classes. After reading, the volunteers distributed books.

King George Students Win Internet Safety Award

King George Middle School students won the FBI's Safe Online Surfing Internet Challenge eighth-grade national championship for April. Almost 200 King George County eighth-graders had the best results of a quiz on Internet safety developed by the FBI and the Fischler School of Education and Human Services at Nova Southeastern University, according to an FBI press release.

PBS KIDS’ Mr. Steve is Coming to Richmond

Enjoy a family concert with Mr. SteveWCVE PBS and WCVW PBS are partnering with the Children's Museum of Richmond for a fun-filled family event.

PBS KIDS' Mr. Steve will be performing three concerts on Sunday, July 17th.  The concerts are scheduled for 10:00 am, 12 noon, and 2:00 pm.  After each performance, there will be an opportunity to meet and greet Mr. Steve.  The concerts are free with admission to the museum.  For more information, call the museum at (804) 474.7000.  This will be a rockin' show!  Please join the fun.

WCVE Writers Contest Winners Revealed

With over 400 entries from kids in grades K-5, the judges of WCVE’s PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest discovered, rather quickly, that they had their work cut out for them. It was not an easy task to narrow the entries down to only 18. But after hours of deliberation, they were ready to announce their first, second, and third place winners.

Chuck Vanderchuck and his sidekick, Ramona, are obsessed with learning everything there is to know about music. Together they will present five different musical genres: Salsa, Jazz, Rock, Country, and Reggae. Children will learn about different instruments used for each musical style, and play games through which they will have the chance to identify instruments, write lyrics, compose melodies, create costumes, and play in a virtual concert with Chuck and Ramona.

PBS KIDS Offers Play-Along Video for Preschoolers

PBS KIDS launched Play-Along Videos, a series of online videos for preschoolers that combine video shorts with interactive game play.  Now available on the PBS KIDS Video Player, the Play-Along Videos feature Dinosaur Train and Super WHY!. In each Play-Along Video, kids interact with characters to help them complete tasks, such as matching items of the correct size or finding the right words to complete a sentence.
