Halloween Blues 2012!

Spooky Flashlight Thing

Join us this week as Time for the Blues (10/28/12) drags out the scariest blues songs we can find! Even if they're not THAT scary, you can always turn off the lights and do that flashlight thing under your chin for effect!

Every kid loves Halloween. And you’ve never met two bigger kids than Henry Cook and Professor Johnny Porter. We love just about everything about Halloween, costumes, parties, and especially candy. Except candy corn. For some reason, Henry absolutely HATES candy corn.

There's More to the Picture than Meets the Eye

Thomas Dolby

Yes, that's a quote from the great Neil Young, from "Hey, Hey, My, My," but sadly Neil won't be featured on this week's World Music Show (10/20). But I like to think that Neil's words sort of encapsulate the drift of the World Music Show.

Here's an example.

Call for Submissions to the 2013 PBS Online Film Festival

Last year's winner: Horse You See

The PBS Online Film Festival is back for its second year, and WCVE PBS and WHTJ PBS want you to be a part of it. There's More to Babalu

Desi Arnaz

Once in a while, we owe it to ourselves, to those of us who appreciate the history of music, to take a look back to what has come before. On this week's World Music Show (10/13), we'll do just that--briefly. Then we'll forged ahead to music of today.

Long-time WCVE Voice Grete Dollitz Is Retiring

After 25 years hosting classical music programs on WCVE Public Radio and several years before that, Grete Dollitz is retiring. Grete’s fans probably know her best for the Sunday-morning program “Hour with the Guitar,” in which she has interviewed all manner of guitarists and other musicians.

Peter Solomon has this retrospective on her life and career.

Soundtracks! More Muddy Waters' London Sessions!

Cadillac Records - Music from the Motion Picture - Deluxe Edition

Join us this week on Time for the Blues (10/7/12) as John and I sample great blues from movie soundtracks! The film Cadillac Records depicts the story of Chess Records and we'll have some killer tracks from it! We'll also hear more from Muddy's London sessions from 1972!

Muy Fuerte Musica

Eljuri-Fuerte

Welcome to Short Attention Span Theater (I know I lifted that lead but it's ok--it was out of love.) In this time of multiple bombardments from a myriad of sources, I completely understand that my opportunity to grab the attention of your eyeballs -- or ear drums, since it's radio after all, for even a few moments--is precious. So, that's why on this week's World Music Show (10/6), I'll be playing some loud (Fuerte), rock-us (is that even a word?) music.

Come See Us at the Richmond Folk Festival!

The Richmond Folk Festival is Coming to Town October 12-14

Last year, more than 200,000 people visited downtown Richmond's riverfront to celebrate the roots, richness and variety of American culture through music, dance, traditional crafts, storytelling and food. The Richmond Folk Festival has become one of Virginia’s largest and most-loved events of the year and has been voted as the best musical festival in Richmond, 2 years running. The 2012 Festival will bring a new and similarly amazing list of performers, artists and exhibitors.

One World, Many Cultures

UB40

Let me ask you this: Have you ever seen this fine blue planet from space? Unless you're an astronaut, then like me, you've only seen the world via pictures. And although those pictures are glorious, do they do justice to just how small this place really is? Maybe. And with that perspective, when your eyeing the globe like this, do you ever think "Man, there are so many different and unique cultres down there"? I do, and on this week's World Music Show (9/29), we'll try to cram in as many of these cultures as we can within a two-hour time frame.
