John’s Throwin’ the Blues!

How to Throw a CD

Join us this week on Time for the Blues (2/26/12) as I'm throwing CDs around the studio and Henry plays the ones that don't hit him! I warned him to bring his catcher's gear into the studio! I have a feeling he'll be chucking a few back to match me! Who wins in this contest? You do! Look--I studied this instructional picture on how to throw them!

“In Performance at the White House: Red, White and Blues”

Official White House Photo by Chuck Kennedy

In Performance at the White House: Red, White and Blues was taped February 21 and will honor the musical form that sprang from the Mississippi Delta and flourished in the Westside of Chicago with deep roots in Africa and slavery.  The performances explore those roots and pay homage to the great figures of the Blues and the songs they made famous by tracing the influence of the Blues on modern American music from soul to rock’n’roll. President and Mrs. Obama were hosts of the concert event in recognition of Black History Month.

“Chihuly in the Hotshop” airs; VMFA announces Chihuly exhibit

In 2006, world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly reunited glassblowers from important periods of his career in a weeklong residency at the Museum of Glass in his hometown of Tacoma, Washington. The residency brought 40 artists and gaffers together to produce pieces revisiting 13 of Chihuly’s most important and best-known series. Chihuly in the Hotshop (February 23 at 8 p.m. on WCVW PBS)  captures highlights of that historic event, following Chihuly and his teams as they create magnificent works of glass art before an appreciative live audience in the museum’s state-of-the-art hotshop. Filmed in high-definition, the documentary offers an intimate, close-up view of the artist’s process, from initial design to completed piece.

Un Saludo a la Música Latina Tradicional

Chapinlandia

On this week's World Music Show (2/18), besides our usual forays into some varied and unique sounds from musical hotspots around the globe (more on these later), we'll be holding a salute to traditional Latin music (which is the translation of this week's blog headline). We're talking about hearing some classic "Son" Cuban music as well as some marimba music from Guatemala. Plus, we'll take a listen to "Musica Ranchera," otherwise known as Mexico's soulful "country music."

What's in it for you?

The Sound of Sunshine

Michael Franti & Spearhead

Right off the bat, I'm going to tell you that this week's headline for the World Music Show (airing 2/11) could be thought of as an oxymoron, or at best, a cruel trick for your ears. How so, you say? Well, in hour two of this week's show, I'm highlighting a few songs from Michael Franti & Spearhead
