Exercising Our Ear Muscles with ACE, the Atlantic Chamber Ensemble

Maria Yefimova

When you listen to programs such as This American Life or Radio Lab, you are drawn in by the storyteller (narrator, host), the story and the sounds that aurally illustrate the story. The elements are generally recorded separately and come together in the production room.  What the Atlantic Chamber Ensemble (ACE) did on May 14th in WCVE’s Studio A was to create a program with all of these element live before a studio audience adding to it a top notch live concert to their program “Exercising Our Ear Muscles with the Atlantic Chamber Ensemble.”

A Marvelous Clouds text from Aaron Freeman (AKA Gene Ween)

Aaron Freeman - Shore Fire Media

I received a text message from Gene Ween.  It said “Muddle up your mind”, which is a lyric from the song “A Man Alone” on his solo debut Marvelous Clouds, recently released on Partisan Records under his given name of Aaron Freeman.  The text was a response to a message I had sent him a few days earlier with the word “Marvelous” – my one word review of the album.  I’d like to think I’m special but it’s probably the same reply he sends to everyone.&nb

Attack of the Killer Accordions!

Accordion

Quick, name an instrument (besides the guitar) that is played almost entirely throughout the world (except for pretty much all of Asia). Did you guess the accordion? I hope you didn't peek at the headline to get that answer. The accordion is the theme of this week's World Music Show (5/19) becuase every once in awhile, it's good to give some props to a global instrument such as this that is held in such high regard.

Exhibit Explores the Staying Power of Children’s Stories

Where The Wild Things Are

Whether it’s the tale of Max and his fearsome-looking monster friends in Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are, or the bull who preferred smelling flowers to fighting matadors in Munro Leaf’s The Story of Ferdinand, a good children’s book can be remembered forever.

Oh Momma!

Carla Bruni

Right off the bat, I want to clarify a little something about this week's World Music Show (5/12). It's not all about Mothers or Mothers who are musicians. Oh sure, I'll feature a few artists who happen to be mother's. But the main crux of this week's show is an ode to a mother I'm quite fond of, my wife Mariah, who happens to also be the mother of my two kids, Piper and Emmett.

Two-hours of Global Goodness

Carsick Cars

If I were a carnival barker (do they still have those?), I'd have that uber-huge megaphone out on the streets of Richmond right now. And through that funnel of sound enhancement, I'd be shouting that on this week's World Music Show (5/5), there is something for everyone. From Big Noise Funky Tropicalismo music to garage-rock out of China, the show will be a cacophony of beats.
