WCVW PBS Increases Kids Programming; Upgrades Charlie Rose Timeslot

Super WHY

Shows like Super Why!, Word World, Curious George and Sid the Science Kid increase the odds that all children in our community succeed in school and in life. That’s one of the reasons as to why WCVW PBS is increasing its PBS KIDS line up. Beginning Monday, May 7 PBS KIDS shows will air starting at 9:00 a.m. and continue throughout the day until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

PBS KIDS programs are designed to help kids explore the worlds of literacy, language, math, science and the arts by providing an environment for children to stimulate their curiosity, encourage interaction and foster their imagination.

The new schedule change on WCVW PBS also improves the encore timeslot for the popular news show, Charlie Rose which moves from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. Acclaimed interviewer and broadcast journalist Charlie Rose engages America’s best thinkers, writers, politicians, athletes, entertainers, business leaders, scientists and other newsmakers in one-on-one interviews and roundtable discussions.

“These changes reflect our goal to use the power of media to educate, entertain and inspire and are consistent with our commitment to lifelong learning,” explains Janet Campbell, Director of Television Programming.

Rumsfeld was a total waste of time. These has-beens stayed in government too long and to allow him the time to continue justifying huge mistakes made by the Bush administration, is irresponsible. Charlie, let's see some fresh people with fresh ideas.

This schedule change has been hard on me and my little ones as well. We don't have cable or satellite tv, nor do we want it. My girls love the shows on public broadcasting and they are their only choice for children's shows, shy of putting on a DVD for them.

On another note, why were Between the Lions and Dragon Tales discontinued?

Your comments above read, "Charlie Rose which moves from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday." But when I check the published schedule [http://ideastations.org/tv/schedules], I can't find him anywhere near those time slots. And when I search for him on that page, and click on his name in the results, then click on the "When to Watch" tab, his program is listed as airing only at 12am and 2am -- ????

Until May 7, The Community Idea Stations has offered two locally-programmed children's lineups Monday through Friday on WCVE 23.1 and WCVW  57.1 (in the Richmond/Petersburg area). This consisted of about 20 hours of children's ready-to-learn programming.  Scheduling and managing these lineups requires a fair amount of resources--resources that were severely reduced with the loss of State funding this past year.

In an effort to continue to bring as many of these programs as possible to our viewers, we made the difficult decision to use a pre-packaged program schedule offered through PBS airing on WCVW during the day. This schedule allows us to provides 10 hours of children's programs daily on WCVW beginning at 9 a.m Monday-Friday. The time slot may have changed, but most of the programs we offered previous to May 7 are included in this new schedule or can be found on WCVE 23.1.

Look for your favorite shows on WCVE 23.1 airing from 6 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday and Sundays from 6-9 a.m. On WCVW 57.1 children's programming will air from 9 a.m. to 7 pm Monday through Friday; Saturdays from  9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sundays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Please reconsider rescheduling the early morning children's shows. This is the prime time for this age group. At 9, many are in preschool, in the afternoon they are napping or (hopefully) playing outside. This is an unfortunate choice.

I agree with both previous comments. Most young kids are awake early in the morning and taking away educational shows from their viewing opportunity would be a great shame and a dis-service both to them and to parents trying to get everything organized in the morning for the day. Please bring back the kids shows before 9am. I know as incentive/reward to my kids for getting ready for school/daycare early I will let them watch Curious George at 8am (if they are ready by then).

I agree--early morning hours are one of the prime times for the under-5 set. Please reconsider.

My kids don't watch a lot of TV - and they certainly don't watch it all day between 9 and 6. When they do (or did) watch it was early in the morning, between 6:30 and 8. Since WCVW is the only PBS station that comes in well at our house - we don't have cable - I'm little distraught (as are they), that you have completely removed the kids shows from the early morning. Aren't most kids at school already during the time you've moved things too? This viewer is heartily begging that some of the kids shows - Wild Kratts, Cyberchase, etc. - be moved back to the hours of 6 - 9 in the morning. I don't think American Experience is going to satisfy the little ones...
