WCVE Public Radio and WCVE Education are pleased to again be able to participate on-site and over-the-air with the Richmond Folk Festival. WCVE Public Radio and WCVE Education will have tents at the Festival, and WCVE Public Radio will provide live coverage from the Altria Stage throughout the Festival weekend.

Performances include Magic Slim & The Teardrops with Big Time Sarah, Chatham County Line, Pedrito Martinez Group, Redd Volkaert Band with Cindy Cashdollar, Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba and more. The entire list of performances can be found here.

Coming out to the Festival? Stop by and see us! The WCVE Public Radio tent will be located near the 2nd street entrance. Stop by and meet some folks from WCVE Public Radio and the Community Idea Stations, sign up to win one of three HD radios, grab a free sling backpack (while they last) and if you haven’t become a member yet, you can do so on the spot!

Bring your family to the Genworth Family Area on Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16 between noon and 6:00 p.m. and get ready for some fun at the WCVE Education table.  The theme is “Around the World,” and there will be lots of children’s activities, including decorating Sesame Workshop Panwapa World fans. We will also be giving away Really, Really Fun Pages booklets and TV programming information.

Catch the Festival over-the-air or online. Can’t make it out to the Richmond Folk Festival or want a bit more on your way to and from the event? Turn on WCVE Public Radio (88.9 in Richmond, 89.1 in the Northern Neck and 90.1 in Chase City), or stream it at ideastations.org/radio for live performances from the Altria Stage:

  • Friday, October 14,  7:00 p.m – 10:00 p.m
  • Saturday, October  15,  noon – 5:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, October  16, noon– 6:00 p.m.

Any chance this will be rebroadcasted or might there be a link to it?

Thanks for once again broadcasting the annual Richmond Folk Festival. My wife and I tuned in often and were able to hear musicians we missed. We just couldn't be for the entire wonderful Festival. But we heard and saw lots of great music and talent; such a variety! And perfect weather (I do remember the rains of years past but that didn't keep us from attending).

I also enjoying listening to the narrator/interview segment of old Richmond and the history and development/redevelopment of the area in and around where the Richmond Folk Festival is held. Though I've lived in Richmond since 1970 and I've explored, read and learned much I found the narrative to be very informative, and
I learned a little more about our City. I have some strong memories of the ancient State Penitentiary, Oregon Hill and Sydney before "The Ditch" (downtown expressway), and Hollywood Cemetery (built out in the country as the narrator said).

By chance is there a text copy of this segment? Thanks for being our community radio station. STEVE

Even though we are not staffing the main WCVE tent at the Richmond Folk Festival on Sunday, please check out the children's activities and giveaways at our Education Services section of the Genworth Family Area of the Richmond Folk Festival.

WHEW! Due to the overwhelming success of giveaways at the main WCVE tent at the Richmond Folk Festival on Saturday, we have nothing left to give out! We will not be staffing the main tent on Sunday, October 16 as previously mentioned but we will still be broadcasting live from the Altria stage.

Thanks to everyone who came out on Friday and Saturday. It was great to meet every one of you. Thanks also for the donations, the Danny Boy Project cd purchases and the comments.

Come meet WCVE Public Radio's Bobbie Barajas, Pam D' Angelo and me at the WCVE Public Radio tent near the 2nd Street entrance on Saturday, October 15 from noon until 4:00. We really enjoy meeting our listeners and hearing what they have to say. You can sign you up to win one of 3 portable HD radios and receive a neat gift just for entering.

Want to buy a WCVE Danny Boy Project cd? We'll be selling them at our tent all weekend. $15 each. Cash or check only, please.

Not a WCVE member but want to become one? No problem! We'll have membership forms at the tent.

Dear WCVE
The REAL star at the Richmond Folk Festival will be Mali's Bassekou KOUYATEH, yet you DID NOAT MENTION HIM when you listed the music this morning on WCVE

Bassekou plays the NGONI, the ancestor of the American banjo (or 'banjar' as Jefferson called it in his journal).

Bassekou KOUYATEH also comes from SEGOU - Richmond's Sister City in Mali, beside the Niger River

Bassekou represents a link with our African ancestors and their music, a link with our Sister City, and an introduction to modern-traditional Malin music

Thank-you for your comment about Bassekou! We are excited about *all* of the groups performing at the Richmond Folk Festival this weekend, though it is difficult to mention them all, with so many performers covering the weekend.

For anyone who would like more information about Bassekou Kouyate, you can visit the website at: http://www.myspace.com/bassekoukouyate

And to see Bassekou at the Richmond Folk Festival, check out the Dominion Dance Pavilion on Saturday at 8:15pm and Sunday at 5:00pm, and the Altria Stage on Sunday at 2:15pm.
