Learning through Nuclear Science
This summer, Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Engineering is again collaborating with the Virginia Section of the American Nuclear Society, and other professional societies, to conduct a four day Science Teacher Workshop on the “Science of Nuclear Energy and Radiation.” Now is the time for teachers in grades 6 through 12 across the US to apply for the 2012 summer program.
Watch the video below from last year's program to find out more.
From July 16- 20, fifty teachers will have the opportunity to explore the subject through lectures, laboratory sessions and tours. Hands-on sessions will include learning how to use Geiger-Muller Counters and exploring a power plant simulator. Trips to one of the nearby Nuclear Power Stations and VCU’s Nuclear Medical facilities give teachers a unique perspective on real-world applications of science and technology concepts covered in the workshop. Teachers also participate in sessions that provide practical ideas for their classrooms and help them develop lesson plans to more effectively teach their students about nuclear science and technology. There are also opportunities to learn about potential careers in nuclear science and time to try out classroom activities correlated with Virginia’s Standards of Learning Objectives.
Dr. Sama Bilbao y Leon, Director of Nuclear Engineering Programs at VCU tells us the goal of the workshop is
To help teachers understand the concepts and beneficial applications of nuclear energy and radiation and to assist them in applying this knowledge in the classroom. We believe that informed teachers and students will then share this information with their families and friends helping them to make informed decisions when discussing applications of nuclear energy and radiation in their daily lives.”
The cost is a $75 registration fee which includes continuing education units, accommodations on the VCU campus, all meals, teaching materials, and a Geiger-Muller Counter to take back to your classroom. If you want to be a part of this dynamic summer program be sure to sign up before June 15, 2012.
The organizers of the “Science of Nuclear Energy and Radiation Workshop” are The Virginia local sections of the American Nuclear Society, the Health Physics Society, the North American Young Generation in Nuclear, and the Lynchburg chapter of Women in Nuclear.
