Get Ready to RUMBLE with VirginiaFIRST Robotics

Calling all robot rookies and veteran bot-builders! Mark your calendars for the VirginiaFIRST Robot RUMBLE, Saturday, October 8th, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Science Museum of Virginia. Don’t miss this family-friendly kickoff of the 2011-2012 FIRST Robotics Competition season. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) sponsors robotics programs for students ages 6-18 to inspire interest in science, technology, engineering and math. More than 125 Virginia schools and organizations will field teams this year for the FIRST Robotics Competition and the FIRST Tech Challenge. Watch the video below to discover more about the fun and challenge of robotics teams and competitions.
The Rumble is a great day to join in on the action and learn more about the competitions. Young people can check out the teams and parents can learn more about becoming involved in the FIRST program. At the Rumble, teams will get back together after summer break, recruit new members, and earn early bragging rights prior to the winter robot building season. Teams will play last season’s game LOGOMOTION, which challenges robots to pick up and hang inflatable tubes on wall racks. The Rumble is also a golden opportunity for robot fans of all ages to test-drive the robots and even earn a “Robot Driver’s License.”
“The Robot Rumble has something for everyone, whether you’re a veteran bot-builder or a robot rookie,” says Pattie Cook, VirginiaFIRST Executive Director. “What a great way to start off the season - you bring in a bunch of kids and a robot and you leave with a team.”
Volunteers will be on hand to talk with visitors who are interested in learning more about FIRST or how to support a team. Information sessions will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The Robot Rumble is free and open to the public. Participants in the Rumble and information sessions will be offered discounted admission to the Science Museum exhibits.
