Family Matters Series Begins 4/16 on Morning Edition
At a time when Americans are living longer, there are more pressures on families to take care of all the generations -- from younger family members who want to attend college or are looking for work, to elderly grandparents who need medical care.
In the eight-week series "Family Matters," Morning Edition profiles three families of the "sandwich generation" -- people who care for their aging parents while supporting their own children -- and examines the social and economic impact on these multi-generational families. Host/correspondent David Greene follows these families as they face difficult challenges in balancing nursing homes for the older generation, college choices for the younger generation and the routine financial burdens of the middle class. Morning Edition will interview financial experts to get practical tips for navigating these issues.
Multimedia content accompanying the series on npr.org will include maps and charts on the demographics of multi-generational families, their financial outlooks and attitudes, photo galleries of the families profiled, and more. NPR business editor Marilyn Geewax will write companion web pieces offering advice from experts on the best ways to handle these large and looming financial questions.
The series airs beginning April 17, and airs through June 4, on Morning Edition.
