On May 19th and 20th, Carreras Jewelers hosted a jewelry appraisal event on behalf of the Community Idea Stations. Members of the public brought in their jewelry and the entire $25 appraisal fee went to benefit the Community Idea Stations. Carreras is a long-time sponsor and has hosted these events in the past.

Mary Ellen Garrigue, Senior Sponsorship Consultant (left) from the Community Idea Stations was presented with a check from Rejena Carreras, owner of Carreras Jewelers.

During the event one of the participants was surprised to discover that what she thought were two pieces of costume jewelry were really vintage pieces, each valued at around $1,000. The appraisal was made by Dennis Clark, one of the staff at Carreras. Here is her story:

“I thought the appraisal event was a great opportunity to support the Community Idea Stations and to discover whether some of my jewelry was valuable enough to require written appraisals. Among the pieces I brought in were two brooches from my husband’s grandmother which I believed were costume jewelry. Dennis started with one of these, a charming bouquet of flowers, which he promptly informed me was 14K gold. The second piece was also gold, with a handmade setting featuring citrines. I had to laugh because I really felt like one of those people you see on Antiques Roadshow who has no idea of the actual value of their inherited item. When I told him that these two pieces could have easily ended up in a yard sale if I hadn’t wanted to keep them he replied ‘It happens all the time!’”
