A is for Asthma
With 1 in 10 U.S. children suffering from asthma, Sesame Workshop is taking steps to help families recognize the signs and manage the symptoms.
According to the American Lung Association, asthma is the leading chronic illness among children in the United States. To give families living with the condition some relief from the worry it can cause, Sesame Workhop created A Is for Asthma, a bilingual education kit full of simple tips for keeping children with asthma active and healthy.
The online kits help families and caregivers recognize what can trigger an attack — and what to do when it strikes — through newsletters, educational activities, and a Sesame Street video featuring Dani, a lovable Muppet who happens to have asthma.
Using the A Is for Asthma kits, both children and their caregivers feel better prepared. Research shows the materials significantly increase children’s knowledge of how to deal with an attack, with “sit down” increasing 6-fold (from 6 percent to 36 percent), “stay calm” increasing nearly 4-fold (from 6 percent to 23 percent), and “get a grown-up to help” more than tripling (from 18 percent to 63 percent). And so a serious condition becomes a lot more manageable, with a little help from Sesame Street pals.
